It’s about the preparation, the journey & the destination

I have to say there are times in my life when I become so concerned about defending the Bible that I get distracted from its beautiful message of salvation in Jesus. Knowing God is all powerful & for whom nothing is impossible is only part of the parcel. He has chosen to work with humanity throughout history bringing many sons & daughters to glory to be with Him. In doing so, part of this life is about preparation before the big trip or journey as much as the expectation of the destination. With Christ we will experience rejection as He did, with Christ we shall suffer as he did, with Christ we shall be raised to glory as he was.

In this the Holy Spirit & Scripture helps me recognise what I need & what I don’t. Heavens bumper sticker is not about where we have been but where we are going… a beautiful place, sin is no more & God is there in all His fullness.

But you, Daniel, close up and seal the words of the scroll until the time of the end. Many will go here and there to increase knowledge.” Daniel 12:4

I came across a photo shoot for a car magazine while doing deliveries in 2011. I asked if I could take a few shots of this old classic. They were happy to oblige but also packing up so I tried to be quick. Much to my surprise was the Bible verse from Dan 12:4 around the rear window although it looks as if at some stage an attempt to cover it has taken place & at another stage been sanded back to reveal the Old Testament prophecy.

Verily

Whatever the circumstance we experience in life we are not alone if we are in Christ. Parents have been known to forsake their children & vice versa. It may seem that we relate more to emptiness & loneliness, if that is the case, then Christ himself speaks from experience when says…

“Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom Luke 12:32

These are not the baseless claims of one who speaks outside his realm. Being reminded of the Lord’s strong & constant love in the midst of a fallen & corrupt world is what we need at times.

It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in princes. Psalm 118:9

Morning has broken

This morning (27 06 13) I woke to the sound of drizzling rain on a tin roof. It’s almost mid-winter & the battery in my delivery van is showing signs of weakness. So I get up early before my wife leaves for work & start the van just in case I need to use the jumper leads. If it starts I take it for a run up the road for a few kilometres. It’s a rattly diesel engine but overall the van has served its purpose well.

I could just buy a new battery but the van will be coming off the road next week during school holidays for a gearbox change so I figure I should attempt that first. It’s a big job but if I use my time wisely & all goes well I can save myself some dollars & have a backup vehicle available as my wife’s work is in an education system.

The last couple of mornings I had left the camera inside, but today I remembered & brought it along. As I write these words the rain & drizzle has settled back in. Earlier the sky was a clearer mix of clear sky, fog & cloud. It was great to be out & about in the fresh morning scanning for shots. As it turns out I did a few more kilometres this morning.

The first shot is from the evening of the 25th on the way to soccer training.

A duck named Flanders

Howdy

Personification & characterisation give us a means to present an argument or case. Advertising & politics can monopolise this to great effect. Daily we can be bombarded with combinations of truth, fiction & non-fiction.

There is the idea that Christians & Religion stand fundamentally opposed to science & no compatibility exists at all. Much of main stream media would have us believe this myth as the idea of evolution seeks to take a greater hold regarding the meaning & purpose of life.

Do people of belief really stand opposed to science, below is a link that may add some objectivity & balance to an often one sided argument.

Ascribe to the Lord

Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them;
let all the trees of the forest sing for joy.

love & faithfulness equals marriage

My beloved spoke and said to me,
“Arise, my darling, my beautiful one, come with me.
See! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone.
Flowers appear on the earth;
the season of singing has come,
the cooing of doves is heard in our land.
The fig tree forms its early fruit;
the blossoming vines spread their fragrance.
Arise, come, my darling; my beautiful one, come with me.”

Song of songs 2:11-13

Abide with me

Do horses run on the rocky crags? Does one plow the sea with oxen? But you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness. Amos 6:12

We see it all around, the manipulation of a situation for personal gain at the expense of something that should be good & esteemed as such. Amos had no formal training, previously a shepherd & a dresser of sycamore trees his spirit filled calling is to speak against idolatry & immorality.

The nobles of the time were more concerned about their luxury & the poor were being subject to oppression, justice was down & out for the count. The Old Testament leadership of the day should have known better than to try their hand against God’s. It is with godly instruction that we are encouraged to pray…”lead us not into temptation, deliver us from evil” as part of the Lord’s Prayer & God’s mighty hand is able to do just that. Economics & productivity is where our hope lies today according to many. While this may be true to a point, to live a productive life with godliness requires wisdom.

“But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure, then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere” James 3:17

Ointment & wounds on a golden pond or sea of crystal.

A bruised reed he will not break, and a smouldering wick he will not snuff out. In faithfulness he will bring forth justice. Isaiah 42:3

In these verses we are given a picture of holy & divine tenderness. There are times in our walk with God when we fail miserably. While our flame should have been bright & warm it was nothing more than a smoulder & unfit for any purposeful use. At other times stuff happens that can leave us bewildered or bemused, our life may seem to be going nowhere or passing us by.

Tagged with failure, disappointment & the blues our spirit can become downcast, some may say move on, put it behind you, no use crying over spilt milk & all that. True enough & much more practical than wallowing in self-pity. Some may say, curse God & die !(Job 2:9)  Yet for us who know Christ to be our all it is His words of encouragement that ring with truth & beauty that comes like a fresh stream in a dry desert.

Phil Keaggy,  like many  Christian artists  offers  portions of  the  Lord’s  love  &  wisdom. In the song “Disappointment” we discover by changing the first letter to H God is near & at work. A veil of sadness is lifted that we may see clearer & trust deeper. The soft tender voice of Scripture speaks with faithful encouragement & bright hope

Lord of time, Lord of all

(John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ ”John 1:15

Geekiness & time travel can get pretty complicated. The Tardis machine & its sci-fi content conversations travel over my head most of the time less my mind ends up like an Escher drawing with optical illusions.

Yet in the NT book of John a man of faith testifies as to the Saviour Jesus. He comes from the beginning but is now present. No fancy tools or unusual dress codes. The divine has taken on human flesh, growing up in a family & then begins to preach the good news of the kingdom of God. What appears to be a ridiculously weak plan that ends on a cruel cross goes to the very heart of hell itself. Forsaken by the Father & experiencing Gods just wrath, death & sin become defeated. Jesus is risen, Jesus the Lord.

It is no different today really, the spiritual struggle invisible to the human eye but present in each human heart unfolds behind a modern backdrop but the story remains the same. In resisting Christ people resist God & follow a different path. Humanities creative abilities have brought great blessing over time through success & failure but also obscured humanities understanding of need & spirituality. Only in Christ are we truly set free.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. John 1: 1&2

Good News

If newspapers play a role in heaven there will be no things to be concerned about. Opinion pages will have lost all there entrenched negativity & complaining. Evil will have been vanquished & goodness & holiness will prosper under the victory & reign of Jesus the King. The love of God so precious here on earth shall be magnified beyond human understanding.

However, as it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived: these things God has prepared for those who love him” 1 Corinthians 2:9.

As the church labors here on earth her reward awaits, life with God unhindered. Suffering we will know for a while, as Jesus said so many years ago but unaffordable everlasting joy awaits in its fullest measure. Nothing on this earth compares.

Not a spectator sport.

I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:14
Yes, a life of faith is more than a game, it is a matter of life & death, spiritually & physically. Keep your eye on the ball & your heart on the Lord.

one two, one two, two

The heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Day after day they pour forth speech, night after night they display knowledge.
Psalm 19:1& 2

Roadies

In response to "Gotta Serve Somebody", John Lennon wrote and recorded the song "Serve Yourself," which was a parody that mocked the injection of religion into Dylan's songwriting. In his diary, Lennon said of Dylan's song, "The backing was mediocre by Jerry Wexler, the singing was really pathetic, and the words were just embarrassing." Wikipedia: Gotta serve somebody.

Spiritually speaking we are captive to one master or another as we journey along the road of life, there is no neutral. Two music greats reflect their poles apart philosophy & belief with their musical talent. A Spiritual battle is depicted in Luke 4:1-13. One seeks to please God, the other says take the glory for yourself, your all that matters... If you are not for God then you are against Him & the cause of that is the lie of Satan.

Christians have a message of hope that comes through the gospel of Jesus Christ. In Him we can be reconciled to God. The wrath of God will not touch those that are in Christ. The Bible encourages us in this regard, it is about salvation & where it can be found…Only in & through Jesus

What drives you….

Make me a captive, Lord, and then I shall be free.  George Matheson, 1842-1906

Scanning the heavens, scanning the Saviour

Getting up close & personal allows us to see much more than we would usually see from a distance. In the life of Abraham God drew near with an abiding presence & promise. The formation of the nation & Old Testament church Israel & through that the coming of Christ & redemption to all nations gives a message of hope to all humanity to hear.

Through Christ we can now draw near to God, having been alienated from his holiness & tender care through the act of mistrust & disobedience of our first parents… what was lost, is now found…in Christ. This is the joy & wonder of salvation to all who believe. This is grace & it is amazing, for God in his justice is not required to show mercy, yet He did. Taking on human form & frailty, giving his whole life that we may truly live in the fullness of what was lost. To know Christ is to know life, not just experiencing our living cells & frame & the evident life of the planet. To know Christ is to be set free of the evil in the world that is in opposition to Him, walking again with God in intimacy & delight. God’s promises are not feel good therapy lessons but genuine promises fulfilled, even before our bodies were formed…

your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be…Psalm 139:16
