F is for Father's day

Fathers of the year 2013, high profile or otherwise

Today is the first day of September 2013, the first day of spring in the southern hemisphere & Father’s Day as it is also a Sunday. Having children means I am celebrated as a Father, having parents means I get to celebrate my Father.

That man I used to look up to as a child, that man that at times instilled fear like a judge or policeman if I had done something wrong, more challenging still, that man whom I worked for, doing an apprenticeship as a boilermaker until I had my indentures transferred.

The truth is I am happy to call him my dad or father, even if he has embarrassed me at times, as parents do. I have come to realise being a parent means more than just being a friend to your kids to win popularity & parents although prone to mistakes, like us all, are intended for my good, they also need room to be themselves. Other parents may appear better at times but that doesn’t mean that is the case.

For years I got the…He looks like his mother, you’re just like your father as family & friends spoke their mind. Amidst that I was trying to work out what was specifically me, a kind of genetic trinity that has something to do with grandparents also, as I celebrated my likes & dislikes in a country with western values.

In putting it all together, honour, love & faithfulness was meant to be part of it, I trust this as it is revealed throughout the pages of Scripture. In many ways I have only begun to scratch the surface & fit that groove, yet the deep love of Jesus assures me of the need to keep in touch with His guiding hand & trust in His eternal & self-existent wisdom alone.

Memories & moments, my earthly father

104. Q. What does God require in the fifth commandment?

A. That I show all honour, love, and faithfulness to my father and mother and to all those in authority over me, submit myself with due obedience to their good instruction and discipline,[1] and also have patience with their weaknesses and shortcomings,[2] since it is God's will to govern us by their hand.[3]

To think or really think, that is the question.

Welcome to the program or be prepared to be programed !

“Think of it like this. The Earth seems finely tuned so we can exist. It's the perfect distance from the sun for mild temperatures and liquid water, it has a protective giant, Jupiter, nearby to keep rogue asteroids from hitting us - all key requirements for intelligent life to evolve. But the Earth is not fine-tuned. The galaxy is teeming with at least 100 billion planets. By chance alone, there will be at least one fit for intelligent life. In a multiverse teeming with universes, there will be at least one that's suited to us.” CATALYST NARRATION

“You know, if you go to the shop and you want to get a nice a suit, are you surprised when they have your size? Well, you would be if there was one suit and it just happened to fit. But if they've got a rack of every possible size, it's no surprise that they have one that fits you. If there are many, many universes with many, many different features, then it's no surprise that there's one that would fit us.”
Professor Brian Greene

Apparently it’s no surprise that the earth, unique in the solar system & the universe is perfectly suited to life? Nothing to see here, just move along say the “authority figures”

Here the lifeless & the life sustaining meld into one. Yet one or two has to ask why all the fuss, why all the  excitement at the smallest of discoveries, the faintest of hopes when it comes to plausible life or sound,  alien or otherwise being out there.

The Jekyll & Hide of secular scientists customising the science with flare & speculation…Think, the earth is fine-tuned, the earth alone is perfectly suited to life, it’s what the science says & consistent with the Bible says.
looks impressive, sounds impressive...
Where's the compliance plate ?
By the way...suit shops are "designed" to sell goods, specifically so.
I went to a general store. They wouldn't let me buy anything specifically...

The significance of the suffering servant

Heidelberg Confession …Q&A format

37. Q. What do you confess when you say that He suffered?

A. During all the time He lived on earth, but especially at the end, Christ bore in body and soul the wrath of God against the sin of the whole human race.[1] Thus, by His suffering, as the only atoning sacrifice,[2] He has redeemed our body and soul from everlasting damnation,[3] and obtained for us the grace of God, righteousness, and eternal life.[4]

[1] Is. 53; I Tim. 2:6; I Pet. 2:24; 3:18. [2] Rom. 3:25; I Cor. 5:7; Eph. 5:2; Heb. 10:14; I John 2:2; 4:10. [3] Rom. 8:1-4; Gal. 3:13; Col. 1:13; Heb. 9:12; I Pet 1:18, 19. [4] John 3:16; Rom. 3:24-26; II Cor. 5:21; Heb. 9:15.

It is here that all peoples are called to place all hope…in Christ, His death & resurrection. The pervading presence of sin no longer has its deadly grip. For a time I may carry the scars of sin & some of its effects but a new spirit has begun its reign. The gospel in all its power calls…Turn, turn. Turn from false hope, look to Christ for salvation, trust in God’s timing, trust in God’s gift. Turn your eyes, turn your ears & turn your heart

This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you:
God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.
1 John 1:5

Do not fear the madness

The arid landscape in the Australian outback has been the backdrop for many a movie scene. In the “future” things become bleak as resources are depleted, so much so that tinned dog food is a sought after meal for human consumption & not too readily shared. A lawlessness exists that has no regard for human life, its dog eat dog in the world of human depravity…welcome to Mad Max where communities are forced to defend themselves against  attack.…are we there yet.

Psalm 121reminds us of God’s character & care as things unfold around us. Whatever our circumstances, In Christ we are never forsaken, things may appear bleak or intimidating but keeping our “eyes”  fixed on Jesus & “walking” a straight path in the freedom He has won enables sustaining grace to fill our souls.

Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it. Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering. Marriage should be honoured by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can human beings do to me?” Hebrews 13: 1- 6

Wind in my hair & some rocks in my head.

It was sometime in the seventies when I got my first ride in an ambulance. A friend near my grandparents had a new bike. A three speed dragster, metallic green with a sissy bar & banana seat. I rode it from a flat section up the hill a bit then turned to coast down. Cruising past I attempted to slow it down by pulling on the hand brakes to no avail. He called out to turn but I was already gaining momentum going down the steeper & longer section of road.

The traffic at the bottom intersection was becoming a concern as the speedster lived up to its name. The speed wobbles had kicked in & I was about to experience an over the hangers (handlebars) moment, wind in my hair & look mum, no hands. It is one way to pull a crowd, thankfully out of concern. It had appeared as if I hit a power pole but that was where I had landed, near its base, losing some skin along the way.

It’s a painful thing to have small objects of gravel removed from wounds, yet necessary for healing to take effect.  So it is with our lives also, sin needs to be removed that we may function as we ought, no matter the decade, year or century.

The sacrifice of atonement through Christ brings peace with God, the Spirit begins to make us new, little by little, day by day.

Gingerbread or daily bread

It was the clever fox who out smarted the gingerbread man. Masked with indifference the cunning fox gains the gingerbread man’s trust…then, when the time is right the helpless cookie is munched to pieces.

Trusting in our own wisdom can bring us undone, the gingerbread man trusted in his ability to run & while good for a time his legs were not enough to save it in the end.

The gingerbread man story is a fable designed to impart wisdom, something that wouldn’t go astray in this day & age. Many people are relying on money or their health to get them through life. For others it’s a career, interest, friends or family that matters the most.

All good things you may say…true & reasonable enough. Yet there comes a time when we all must cross from life on earth to the death of the body. For the Justin Cases (just in case) of this world Christianity may seem to be a good insurance policy for the future & for the materialists just a trap of the mind as they trust in human knowledge & interpretation.

True Christianity isn’t “what’s in it for me” it is “wow” look what’s been done for me. God has freely made provision that I may crossover from death to life, not just for the life to come but also new life in Christ now. Enabled by faith the Word & Spirit impart wisdom that I may know what is real & what is not, what is trustworthy & what is not.

Heidelberg Confession (125)

Give us this day our daily bread. That is: Provide us with all our bodily needs so that we may acknowledge that Thou art the only fountain of all good, and that our care and labour, and also Thy gifts, cannot do us any good without Thy blessing. Grant therefore that we may withdraw our trust from all creatures, and place it only in Thee.

The church mouse & the laying of hand

washed clean with more than soap.

Momentum for movements, personal or otherwise can bring about great improvement & change, but equally so great loss. Being behind the times & on the wrong side of history may seem to be speaking the loudest at the moment as many seek to equate sexuality & pleasure as of no consequence.

Changing laws may help enforce a collective code for a nation or state, but that cannot heal a heart or restore a soul. The ever brokenness of humanity cannot find satisfaction in the imagining of our minds & the strength of our wills. It’s in God alone that salvation exists. Set free from the myth of moral relativism & the bondage of sin through Christ’s spirit, our souls & life begin to magnify the Lord.

For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. Titus 2:11

For life is more than a personal fleeting moment of self-expression or political will…that is why Jesus came as He did, confronting sin in all its opposition. The Ten Commandments while effective for a time, were powerless against the human condition, something greater was needed. It can only be found in Christ.

“Come now, let us reason together,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool. Isaiah 1:18

The not so friendly face of authority & liberty

It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in human beings.

It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in princes.

Psalm 118 : 8-9

Who was & is & is to come, amazing God.

In the context of much science & philosophy that can seep into the daily mindset…

To admit that there is One who lies beyond us, who exists outside of all our categories, who will not be dismissed with a name, who will not appear before the bar of reason, nor submit to our curious inquiries: this requires a great deal of humility, more than most of us possess, so we save face by thinking God down to our level, or at least down to where we can manage Him.

Seeking & finding requires a heart.

I know that my redeemer lives, & that in the end he will stand on the earth. & after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God: I myself will see him with my own eyes, I, & not another. How my heart yearns within me! Job 19: 25-27

In Christ we find life, in Christ we discover salvation, there is no other place.

Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified. John 7: 38 & 39.

An Independent Spirit

“How independent of outward circumstances the Holy Spirit can make the Christian ! What a bright light may shine within us when it is all dark without.” C H. Spurgeon

Game on

Whether it’s night or day, when it comes to worry I am my own worst enemy. Considering the calamity & deception that unfolds minute by minute it’s probably not an unusual thing to do. But give worry some momentum & it can knock you flying. Worse still is that God has assured me I need not worry the way that I do. But hey, I am a natural, although spirit driven through the gospel of Christ I must do battle with my old nature, not only against my flesh but also my mind.

Justin Taylor has a blog post today that addresses the Christian dilemma…click here.

The need for speed

A quote from “the Castle”1997…an Australian comedy film
Dale Kerrigan:
If there's anything Dad loved more than serenity, it was a big two stroke engine on full throttle!

The serenity prayer is on the right track when it has God in mind. The thrust of Scripture draws a large contrast between the ability of God & the ability of people including Christians. God the giver of all things good imparts His wisdom & Spirit through Christ. He calls us to be active in prayer & devotion seeking His will. In Him & His Grace we have all we need, for this life & the next... Settle for nothing less.
The Serenity Prayer
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and
puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
Matthew 7: 24

People get ready

All religions are the same & therefore easily dismissed as some ancient way of coping with the environment & its elements implies much of modern thought. Relying heavily on evolutionary theoretical assumption so often presented as fact the illusion continues. Being fed glimpses of initial discoveries & “breakthroughs” via the media plays its role in misinformation as the story fades without the corrections of further investigation. Natural history film & photography voice overs indoctrinate the unwary, peer reviews produce edited material….and they say religion doesn’t allow you to think…

It is in this modern maze that we know as life God calls his children to walk by faith as earthly mindsets challenge for conformity. In this regard there are many variations & counterfeits but only one true original source. Salvation by grace which is full & free is the only way to God. He came from heaven & took on human form, He gave that we might take, in taking we learn in gratitude to give. It is all from God. Knowledge gives us many things as does discernment but like money it cannot buy or lay claim to love in its purest form which is fully & freely given by the giver.

See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall, and the one who believes in him will never be put to shame.” Romans 9 : 33
