Endless ages

Luther was riding a big wave & it took courage & conviction to paddle out to meet it. Ordinarily around here  when I see the power displayed in an ocean it’s small in comparison to other oceans, seas & storms & unlike the parable of the wise man & the foolish man which holds an eternal spiritual truth .Psalm 46. takes on the bigger scale where even the mountains fall into the sea. One thing remains the same however. Both point to & have their foundation in Christ.

To be still & to know that God is God cannot come from our mind or will. It is to be found in Christ alone & requires faith which is a gift from God. Eph 2:8.

Yea, it's Reformation Day

Heb 11:1

Q. What is your only comfort in life and death?
A. That I, with body and soul, both in life and death, am not my own, but belong unto my faithful Savior Jesus Christ; who with his precious blood has fully satisfied for all my sins, and delivered me from all the power of the devil; and so preserves me that without the will of my heavenly Father not a hair can fall from my head; yea, that all things must be subservient to my salvation, wherefore by his Holy Spirit he also assures me of eternal life, and makes me heartily willing and ready, henceforth, to live unto him

The middleman

Beware or behold !

The local paper with its almost non- stop barrage of atheistic comment/complaint form recorded another inked & pixel - ed commentary for its readership to be informed or miss- informed as is often the case.

Needless to say but the sceptics & critics also get their information from somewhere but somehow that is OK because it’s OK because they are pots & religious people are just kettles on the great stove of simmering stories.

So anyhow I am not for one moment suggesting that the church or those in leadership are perfect & funnily enough when we read the Old & New Testament we don’t have to look that far before we understand that God understands this also. But all in all God still holds teaching & teachers as instruments of Grace & truth along with discipline, patience & mercy

How great is our God

How good is His news

Learning curves

At church of late we have been going through the book of Numbers. Time & again things went pear shaped (or viper head shaped) for the Israelites when they trod the path of disobedience. Yet God in mercy & patience bears with the failings of a stubborn people providing a way in which they may be healed. Numbers 21: 4-9 (The Bronze Serpent)

Many mistakenly assume (& deliberately misdirect often) that faith must be against technology, intelligence & medicine because of instances such as the bronze serpent but what is really going on is a spiritual lesson for the Israelites. Throughout Scripture there are numerous examples of day to day items that are used in our daily walk with God that find their source in the natural world. Christian scientists, doctors, nurses, pharmacists etc. walk by faith & gratefully use the abundance of creation to administer goodness to a sick & hurting world.http://whyibelieve.org.au/

But ultimately to find what is necessary for true & lasting healing there is only one place that we must look. John 3:14. And as we make a pilgrimage through this life we may also wander onto a path of deception as the Israelites did. 1 Cor 10:9-13. On this earth & in this life we are instructed to tread carefully & keep our eyes fixed on Jesus.

In a tank

I get to see this little but well armoured creature once a week usually, except in winter when he/she hibernates. It belongs to a lady whose groceries I deliver. With “Fury” the movie getting some promo lately I came across an article that featured the reflections of a veteran soldier who eye witnessed & physically experienced life (& almost death) in a Sherman tank. He got to see the new movie & shared some of his insight.

The turtle (eastern long necked) by the way, is named ET. As a kid I recall a few war movies with tanks & tactics & I have been known to freak out when I get hammered in some basic computer war/tank games when virtual missiles come my way.

Spiritual warfare is also a reality in this world. Eph 6: 10 - 20. It is for good reason that Christians are reminded to put on the full armour of God as we proclaim…

Psalm 124:8 “Our help is in the name of the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.”

get to go to our eternal home.

Head & Heart & Him & Her

Heidelberg Catechism Q & A 94.

God spoke all these words, saying: I am Jehovah thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

94. Q. What does God require in the first commandment?

A. That, as much as I love my soul’s salvation, I avoid and flee all idolatry, sorcery, soothsaying, superstition, invocation of saints or other creatures; and that I rightly acknowledge the only true God, trust in him alone, submit to him with all humility and patience, expect all good from him only, and love, fear, and honour him with my whole heart; so that I leave and forsake all creatures rather than do even the least thing against his will.

 ............................

Contrary to popular secularist belief, faith is not & never has been superstitious…Supernatural & natural/Creator & created, yes, superstitious, no. Whether it is a horses shoe, a rabbit’s foot or a human’s brain, they all find themselves in the realm of the created & should not be worshipped or adored above God (touch wood:)

From the time of Noah & the dispersion at Babel as nations were created & developed the knowledge of God was being undermined by delusions of grand proportion & misdirection. Such is humanity's ability to fabricate untruth for the sake of self. Enter equivocation & don’t walk under that ladder! So the world is broken & it wasn’t because of a shattered mirror or a bit of bad luck & some tea leaves in the bottom of a cup isn’t going to tell you much without an interpretation…God does not require that we switch off our brain, it is after all a gift from him along with our hearts.

Getting a grip on water

I’m an outward person as much as an inward one as I reflect the image of God, natural & Supernatural happenings on a daily basis. But furthermore & more importantly is the reality that God has reached out & touched me (so to speak) removing a blinding veil that I may truly know. 2 Cor 3: 7-18.

What DNA is unable to do can be accomplished through the Spirit of God. God is pleased to use the simplicity of washing away dirt & dust to remind me that He washes away the reality & powerful grip of sin in all its shades of death & despair no matter how colourful or appealing they appear.

Joshua Tree

This week I was challenged on a blog (newspaper comments) regarding the truthfulness of Scripture. The claim was that Matt 1 contradicts Luke 3 regarding Jesus parents. It is easily answered & found on the web, so while some have genuine concerns regarding Scripture others deliberately antagonise or just couldn't be bothered to make headway. What makes it more disappointing is when you go to a fair amount of effort to provide an answer only to have a mystery moderator deny the answer.

Matt 1 follows Joseph's family line whilst Luke 3 follows Mary's family line. Not something I was familiar with or if I was I had forgotten. So instead of writing

Matt 1 follows Joseph's family line whilst Luke 3 follows Mary's family line.
Matt 1 follows Joseph's family line whilst Luke 3 follows Mary's family line.
Matt 1 follows Joseph's family line whilst Luke 3 follows Mary's family line.
Matt 1 follows Joseph's family line whilst Luke 3 follows Mary's family line.
Matt 1 follows Joseph's family line whilst Luke 3 follows Mary's family line.
Matt 1 follows Joseph's family line whilst Luke 3 follows Mary's family line.
Matt 1 follows Joseph's family line whilst Luke 3 follows Mary's family line.
etc etc etc, I decided to do a doodle...1 Cor 13 : 8 -13

Apocalypse Now

Revelation…What a book, what a prophecy. If things were really as they seem then it wouldn’t be hard not to notice the end times, or so it would seem. While many are seeking to rewrite a history of their own making, the Apostle John, through the Spirit, presents this prophetic announcement for the eyes & ears of the church, the body of Christ.

Revelation as far as time goes is the gap between the resurrection of Christ & His second coming. Often though it can be presented as chronological, one big sweeping scene before the Christ again will appear on earth. Hendriksen (William Hendriksen: More than conquerors) however interprets the book as the same story told seven times that develops in climax.

Revelation is more than a T shirt with a few numbers on it or a barcode on a body part(mark of the beast & all that), nor is it fantasy or fanciful. Primarily symbolic this prophecy reveals a spiritual truth that reveals a humanity that has gone AWOL & takes matters into its own hands. God will not allow this rebellion to last, He will bring it to an end before all things can be made new again. Hallelujah for Revelation.

Its a jungle (symbolic) out there...

Tribulation is not dead

Rev 11:3-14

The two witnesses in sackcloth testifying is the church ministering to the world throughout the Gospel age which will expire. The world, under a powerful delusion, but very self-assured & propelled by spirit takes delight when the two witnesses are overpowered & killed by the beast. So much so that the giving of gifts seems appropriate. But their joy is short lived. God plays the revealing card at a time of His choosing, He breathes life & the two dead bodies come alive, they rise & walk. Joy now turns to terror for those that rejoiced in the downfall of the witnesses. This is not payback but judgement for not heeding the warnings of the message sent by God, a consequence of unbelief. Salvation alone comes through Christ.

I have compiled this working from the Bible passage & More than Conquerors. William
Hendriksen.

God's messengers

I like Bob Gass, I hear him on the radio every now & then whilst on the road. In a way he is the Stephen Hawking of Christianity in the public domain when it comes to voice recognition (for me). It’s not that we don’t have our own individual sound or voice but some are more recognisable in an instant. I often thought of him as a frail or little (but wise & godly) old man when his broadcasts would come across the airwaves.

So one day I googled Bob Gass & put a face to the name & learnt a bit more. He has been an instrument of good like so many others as he brings the good news of the gospel to a fallen world.

In the little & big things Gods ways are pure & good & a unfathomable source of wisdom. While many make the assumption that religion is about Sundays or a once a week thing, Christianity is about every minute of every day. Maths & marriage, science & singleness, art, love & life, happy & sad, driving or walking, sitting or rising… & they find their fullness in Christ.

And while God’s ways do not change we are always learning, always growing, in the vastness of his kingdom. Put that in your inbox…

Truth & Tone

In some parts of Kingdom Cyber an almost endless invisible ream of data (often crude) hits the airwaves at great speed. Angelic messages of darkness& light come from inspired minds hurtling through cyberspace entering into hot spots & antenna. It’s a global world of subterfuge where manipulation abounds. Newspapers & their writers reveal their bias at times but the comments scroll has become an art form for many, a way of life where solidarity melds into a perceived truth. Communities are built & alliances are formed. One person may be four or three & a network of seven can become seventy. Three score & ten with multiple electronic addresses are in for the numbers & letters gamers. Answering their call of duty & pumped for their political or ideological persuasion they whip up the crowd, rigging the system for an intended outcome…its more than a tonal experience, feel the infuriated vent, feel the self- righteous rage, witness the deception, but don’t fall for it, day or night.

Rev 12:17 Then the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to make war against the rest of her offspring—those who keep God’s commands and hold fast their testimony about Jesus.

Lamenting in the big garden

In two media items yesterday, a cartoonist & an opinion writer both lamented the vast extinction of species that has recently been reported somewhere. Following on from that in the comments scroll many people’s estimation came down to animals being the jewel in the crown & humans along with apportioned blame being the lowest of the low.

In one way I would have to agree when it comes down to responsibility or management, humanity has not managed this side of things as it has taken so much for granted in its pursuit of power & wealth. But then again humankind is remarkable in intelligence & design that goes beyond a few degrees of difference from animals & in particular apes. We are unique & govern by the cultural mandate declared in Genesis.

It’s not hard to be inspired & stilled by the majestic & creative power of creation whether its micro, macro, small, medium, large or cosmic & if this is great how much greater is God.They are both awe inspiring, breath taking & beautiful, but I have to say God takes precedent & only He can save, even if we in small steps have sought to repair some of the damage.

Yes…humanity is broken & this world & universe is crumbling like a ruin. It’s not hard to see the crushing weight of sin, ignorance & decay. All the more so when we consider the primary original garden & what was lost there. We should lament this more than anything & then turn to Christ who alone can & is making all things new…There is only one way & He is the key to salvation & restoration.

Art News: Living on the edge

The non- painterly style but very pasty (& crunchy) pop craft icon found its inspiration from a small kitchen pantry/cupboard/whatever.

Dandy duck has not ruffled too many feathers down at the local country women’s association art & craft exhibition. Many were drawn to its warm hues & homely ambience.
