Quite Inaccurate Theology…again.

Stephen Fry is not up to it when it comes to the Bible. For all his apparent thirst for knowledge & stuff quite interesting the alarm bells are ringing for the man who got it oh so wrong concerning God.

It would seem Fry has been carrying this unresolved gripe in his heart for a long time now. He has no such opposition for the mythological Greek gods though, funny that. He wants to blame God for what is really our human predicament, even after God forewarned humanity clearly of the consequences. Furthermore God came & took on our burden in the person of Jesus Christ & went all the way to death taking on himself the wrath of God so that we may be made whole.

So when Stephen Fry goes up to God & says what’s all this about then, this cancer in bones & insects in eyes? God will say I made it abundantly clear in the words of the Bible & the person of Christ. Why did you reject such a glorious & life giving message in place of blind pitiless indifference to me that also has terrible consequences?

1 Corinthians 1:18-31

A closer & brief look at the history of the claim.

A mighty boast by Fry

A spick & span still life.

My grandmother/Oma/Ma had family heirlooms throughout her home.
Some she brought with her initially & others came later with trips overseas to visit family. You could notice the difference when they had been polished,
they would shine beautifully in the light once the dull surface had been attended to.

Sureley God is good.

It was our wedding anniversary weekend away that also fell on the Australia day holiday weekend & we were hoping to get into a restaurant but the two that we rang were booked out. We opted for some take away & a found a quiet place where we looked across the ocean towards my hometown.

The ocean that conceals so much & covers over vast areas of ground was powerfully & gently rolling in towards the shore before rolling back again. As the sun continued to blaze through the orbiting atmosphere the ocean blue darkened in tone.

Although we benefit in many ways from the modern world with its ever growing mountains of data (& trash), just as our intelligent ancestors did (don’t fall for the Neanderthal ug ug) humanity runs the risk of losing the wisdom of God & the essence of our humanity forever.
Particularly so in the secular culture that wages war on faith in the name of freedom.

Having a darkened understanding with mountains of data will never fix the problem of indwelling sin…John 1: 1-14.

Hail Taxi & Caesar Salad.

I don’t know much about Latin, Cumaean Greek or Phoenician abjad. When I notice some flora or fauna I tend to go with plain Old English, except when I am at Subway then I might go with Mozzarella or Swiss. The truth is I don’t know much about English either or maybe I mean English grammar. It’s an all shook, shook up world when it comes to language…Babelic aspirations (Gen 11:1-9) will do that to you.

It’s great that we display evidence of being intelligent beings created in the image of God & our language is testament to that among other things. In my quest to summarise & formulate the natural things in the created order I have found some of Chris Tomlins lyrics helpful in understanding flora & fauna without the Latin.

“Every creature unique in the song that it sings,
all exclaiming, indescribable, uncontainable”

the past in the present

Basically it’s a big island with many stories to tell. What once was a land inhabited by a native people with flora & fauna that possesed a unique longitude & latitude then became oppressed by pale faced people from Britain that brought a northern hemisphere culture to a southern hemisphere land. The fall out remains as time goes by.

Not straight away but not too far down the track, peoples, their beliefs & cultures from across the globe have come to Australia in search of something that you can’t get on google. You can though get a truck load of American content & culture indoors via the flat screen & now on the mod conned communication tools that act like a cave wall & homemade paint. So this conglomerate of people can share many stories on this basically big island named Australia that has a whole lot of little islands close by.

There is much that I love about this land & its people.

Happy Australia Day

Not Mother nature, it's more than Nature.

We have no say in our conception, we sort of catch up with how we got here piece by piece further down the line from what I can tell. Life for me is miraculous in all its shapes & forms. More than an interpretation of natural elements, I perceive design & purpose rather than a set of coincidences & freakish chances. In other words the information required came not from nature but from something greater.

Sin & ignorance has distorted the picture of life as genetically we now decay… the sting of death is already at work within. But again we cannot help but be caught up in the wonder of birth & life despite the surrounding tragedies of the fall in any country whether it be at war or peace.

With the assistance of animation & music this impressive youtube production (thanks to Justin Taylor for creating awareness) expresses the wonder that is also born when human life begins. Even more wonderful again is the knowledge that God & His workmanship is witnessed in these most private of places. God is into His creation & he wants us to marvel in it & in Him.

Knock knock...

There are so many doors that are opened & closed each day, if it’s not the wind or a breeze it may be an electronic door hooked up to a sensor or code, but usually it’s a hand that reaches outwards & if that is tied up then maybe a hip, a shoulder or elbow. On occasion ramming devices & plastic explosives will unhinge a solid doorway.

My Ma was deceived once when someone deliberately littered her backyard, when she went out to tidy it up someone ran inside & locked her out & attempted to rob her home & then fled through the front door & down the street.

But this world is not just about physical things & barriers, there are doorways for our spiritual activities that affect our souls & spirit. It matters where we go & what we do with our eyes & ears, our hands & feet. God expects us to guard our hearts & minds & has given His Spirit & His Word that we may truly know. God reached out to us in Christ that we may have a home, a family & nation founded on truth, justice & godliness. Rev 3:7-13.

Taking shape

God is at work in this world, shaping His people, His church, to the likeness of Christ. Not by might or power (humanly speaking) but by His Spirit, His eternal Spirit. Eph 2:10.

As in the days of Noah so it is now. Luke 17:26. Building on the rock, walking by faith & trusting in grace we look to the Lord.

Up & down & round & round

No, not a yo yo

Day or night, night & day, good weather permitting, eyes in the sky assist individuals, societies & governments with surveillance techniques & technologies. In what appears to be shaping up as a more instant & electronic global communication system one could easily fall for the impression that nothing is impossible for humanity, yet technological failures & human error are a constant it would appear, day or night, night & day.

If it looks like a duck

If it looks like a duck & sounds like a Comanche then it’s probably a helicopter, if it looks like a duck & sounds like a chinook then it’s probably a helicopter.

Funny isn’t it, we see design all around, purpose built stuff that we borrow from nature yet we dare not call it design lest we invoke the supernatural instead of a purposeless freakishly event so full of purpose & order.

Richard Dawkins says “Biology is the study of complicated things that give the appearance of having been designed for a purpose” then proceeds to argue that they were not.

The Bible speaks of such resistance of what is plain to see. Romans 1:20.

Game on & game

The Asia Cup Soccer Tournament is currently underway in Australia, which is a plus for soccer fans. I have watched a bit & came across this item this morning...a child shows the way.

Penalties & penalty shoot outs can be pretty daunting affairs for both the shooter, the keeper, the team & their supporters. I am not familiar with the technique of asking the ball boy which way the ball will go (game).

This is an old photo from my soccer days of years gone by. I played in an all age church comp for many years, we won a premiership or two, one that went into extra time, then a penalty shoot out with some extra penalties to be the decider...tense & legendary stuff.

One of our many esteemed players was a professor at a university who was in contact with overseas students, one year we had two Argentinian's that played, probably since they could we were grateful for the opportunity to pass on some of our skills so they could take them back to South America to share:)

One of our backs (4 4 2 usually) was a young guy who quoted Monty Python throughout the game, we had two midfielders who ran all day, one a welshman & the other a train driver who was usually late & was probably responsible for the trend of short shorts. Our captain insisted on enjoyment & tactics, a forward who could get inside or outside his man for the shot....

Not always apparent

Although rain has been showering  all of the day, the past week was hot & humid, except for early in the mornings. On a few occasions I have been able to spend time with my wife paddling & swimming which is a good activity also for the strengthening of my core muscles says my doctor. As usual I have my camera intact & nine times out of ten remember to bring along a spare battery.

This is a short video clip of one of our adventures into an unknown part of the river system in the area.

Yesterday we ventured to another part of the river after having some lunch with the kids as they swam in one of their favourite swimming spots. Further up the river we came across an Azure Kingfisher that puzzled us as it hardly changed its position for a very long period. At one moment it appeared to dive & then hover & splash upon the surface before being half submerged for another long period of time.

I thought it had maybe caught something large & was holding onto that with its feet, my wife thought it may be cooling itself. We decided to leave it & head further along. Upon our return it was again standing upon the small log so we assumed all was good but I began to be concerned for the beautiful bird’s wellbeing. We moved in slowly & got ever so close (which was unusual) & then in a burst it flew off which eased my mind.

Later that night after downloading images, I discovered that the bird had been caught up in fine fishing line. I noticed again that the log was very wet which suggested it had been there & in a struggle for a long time.

Current Affairs

We forget so easily,(this is not an ad for brainetics or enhanced memory recall)
yesterdays news fades fast unless its your axe to grind or you have a memory like an elephant.

Caught up in the media hype & personal quests without waiting for the bigger picture to eventuate has its dangers.

It's no wonder we question ourselves at times...who am I.The pressure to conform to mainstream or worldy judgements is a strong current. The crowds are there to be whipped up or played. I am neither of the two images below yet I share in their story.

Jesus understood the world in which He walked, more than any. The temptations, the governments, religions & beliefs of the day. In his unmatchable wisdom he calls us to build in one place & one place alone...on the rock, Christ the solid rock. Matthew 7:24-29.

The colt of no regret

Of course science should be objective & the scientific method seeks to assure this outcome but historical science is a horse for a different course altogether.

Show me the evidence or the “facts” & I will believe claims the atheist regarding the super natural, with their blinkers on….

Beauty & the Beast

The Guards Mock Jesus Luke 22:63-65.

The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. They blindfolded him and demanded, “Prophesy! Who hit you?” And they said many other insulting things to him.

It would seem the archaic practise of throwing insults is still alive some two thousand & something years later (which should be no surprise).

Insulting, provoking & killing as a means to an end is the often preferred model for apparently civilised societies today, east or west & anything in between.

Large scale or small….There is a lot to be said for free speech & rights but something greater is required for this life, as Jesus taught. Matthew 8:5 -13.

I would love to know what this tiny individual thinks of rights & cowardice too, in our allegedly civilised societies.

Oh baby baby it's a wild world

Thou shalt not kill (updated)

A lot of cartoonists are coming out in solidarity regarding the incident in Paris with the Charlie Hebdo attack… 12 people killed & 11 people injured… plus the fallout.  A big theme is freedom of speech but I suspect even free speech can morph into antagonistic dogma as much as anger can morph into murder, cold or hot blooded murder.

105. Q. What does God require in the sixth commandment?

A. That I, neither in thought, nor in word or gesture, much less in deed, dishonor, hate, wound, or kill my neighbor, whether by myself or by another, but lay aside all desire of revenge; moreover, that I harm not myself nor wilfully expose myself to any danger. Therefore, also, the magistrate is armed with the sword to prevent murder.

106. Q. But this commandment seems to speak only of murder?

A. In forbidding murder, God teaches us that he abhors the root of murder, as envy, hatred, anger, and desire of revenge; and that he accounts all these as murder.

107. Q. But is it enough that we do not kill our neighbor in any such way?

A. No; for when God forbids envy, hatred, and anger, he commands us to love our neighbor as ourselves: to show patience, peace, meekness, mercy, and all kindness towards him, prevent his hurt as much as in us lies, and do good even to our enemies.

(Heidelberg Catechism: Lord's Day 40)

6's & 7's & 8

“Lucky” & “Unlucky”… When I hear either of those words it has an implication of events. It is as if the world or the universe is oblivious to humanity, maybe a bunch of natural laws are in play or equally a bunch of Greek gods warring above & humanity in its smallness can only dodge what may come it’s way or hope that a demi - god of influence is nearby, other than that it’s down to human intelligence to find a way…Because of the volatile picture of nature many assume an impersonal randomness of no real set purpose for humanity.

Psalm 8:1-9. on the other hand reveals a declaration of design & order, God, the only God who is in control. Humanity has been given a place of honour in the created order, crowned as it were. There is no luck here. Yes, sin & tragedy occur along with blessing but this is not an equation of impersonal meaninglessness, our intelligence comes from the maker of heaven & earth but faith is required to walk in humbleness of heart. Yes, there is something majestic & ordered about our predicament & surrounds, this in a way reflects the intelligence & majesty of God, who is forever praised.

Cool Forest

Last Thursday was a New Year’s Day holiday & we decided to travel about an hour to Barrington Tops National Park to do some bushwalking. There are pockets of rainforest with beautiful clear rivers & streams.

At one point I was tracking a Lyrebird in the hope of a good photo but it alluded me so I gave up & went for a swim. While swimming the lyrebird came out onto a branch, burst into song then flew across the river with its flowing tail, it hopped up into some trees & joined a mate sitting silently in the canopy. I swam off to get my camera but by the time I got back they were gone. It was a great moment to witness but disappointing that I couldn’t get it on film…never mind.

So today I was doodling with some rainforest images but somehow ended up revisiting some images from New Zealand, in particular the Kea, which is a mountain parrot that is known to habit the birch forests of Arthurs Pass.
