Slow & Scarabish

December in Australia is pretty much beach weather. In the hotter months the bugs are out in the evenings. Turn on some bright lights & the bugs come, beetles too.

A cumbersome chopper more than a speeding jet.

Starry Starry night with hope in sight.

Not celebrating the date, or the decoration of trees,
or the climatic season but the birth of Christ like a parable.

In 1536 or so lived a man named Martin

I cant really pin this song down in some respects but it relates on many levels for me. Don Mclean is much a philosopher as much as musician.

Talking Turkey & Truth

I don’t know much about American culture except what I have learnt on TV mostly so I probably know a fair bit. So it’s thanksgiving & turkey is on the menu & it probably has something to do with the Pilgrims who were escaping religious persecution back in England.

We have bush turkeys here in Australia & two big birds (flightless), the cassowary & the emu (approach with extreme caution…actually don’t approach.)

Our neighbours down the back have turkeys in a pen, they have a very distinct call (which is noisy according to my wife). I tend to think they are not the most glamourous of birds despite their beautiful colours. People don’t tend to favour wrinkly skin with dangly bits (sorry Davey Jones but that’s just the way it is).

I would say most people will be more focused on the golden brown flesh & skin in relation to cooking (please pass the gravy) & the turkey’s last thoughts (?) would have been more akin to behind enemy lines.

But still, in this very volatile world we have every reason (or at least 10,000) to be thankful & give thanks. God is not dead, nor has He abandoned His mission of Salvation. Great is Thy faithfulness, God provides good things for our enjoyment, its why we give thanks.

Modern Myth Makers

People have always followed people from what I have seen. The modern world with its technological innovation building on past inventions has intensified that from a communication perspective.

So, little truths can become big truths & little deceptions can become big ones…enter Google doodle & its homage to Lucy & her alleged standing in the scheme of things…

Responding to Spirit

Living with God requires track work/training. We need to be shaped & learn control. We also need to be quick & slow, learning different paces. No, we are not the ones who crack the whip, we are to be the responders.

Our body parts all come together to serve a goal or purpose, to glorify God. In Him we have freedom, grace, mercy & infinite wisdom but we are also called to grow & mature. It’s not something that comes naturally to us. God is our personal trainer. James 1:19 - 27.

The frozen & the un-frozen

Some of our family went to watch an ice hockey game for the first time the other week. A young lady plays where my wife works. It just so happens that the school also has a visiting lady teacher from Canada who got to play as well (both on the red team).

On the night it was a mixed comp, men & women & pretty exciting. A bit of sound system hype when a goal is scored with the team’s song being played but no cheer leaders & no summersaults or anyone taking of their shirts in celebration…no streakers either.

Overall, lots of skills, end to end stuff & one injury when someone got corralled into the wall. The red team won & the Canadian lady had obviously played before & was great in defence & attack reading the game well. Both teams had their opportunities but it was the red team’s goalkeeper that made some great saves under pressure, somehow picking the puck out of the air & along the ice from ensuing attacks that probably made the difference.

From the little that I have read ice hockey finds it’s roots with native American Indians.

Flocking to Mega or the Messiah

People love to follow by the look of it. Partakers in the modern world just can’t get enough of their digital pied pipers. Money for nothing & your chicks for free almost… rock star celebrity status with selfies for confirmation & promotion...pretty tribal & ancient when you think of it.

But can you survive the modern land of Mega Follow. Life in the fast, fast mbps lane & is that how we are meant to live anyway. Is it all it’s cracked up like a phone screen due for repair meant to be & will your device save your soul or even tell you you have a soul or is it only interested in your heart rate & location.

No one is on a road to nowhere.Yes we all serve, worship or follow something & consequences follow too. So who or what do you serve, worship or follow & will it stand the test of time & truth.

John 10:1-21.Psalm 23:1-6.

Where freedom is found, not lost.

In explaining & summarising Scripture the Heidelberg Catechism addresses the 7th commandment, Thou shalt not commit adultery.Lord’s Day 41.

108. Q. What does the seventh commandment teach us?
A. That all unchastity is accursed of God; and that we must, therefore, detest it from the heart, and live a chaste and continent life both within and outside of holy wedlock.

109. Q. Does God in this commandment forbid nothing more than adultery and such like gross sins?
A. Since our body and soul are both temples of the Holy Spirit, it is his will that we keep both pure and holy; wherefore he forbids all unchaste actions, gestures, words, thoughts, desires, and whatever may entice one thereto.

It’s a big ask & reveals our incapability to fully match it when it comes to the holiness & goodness of God. He who is without sin cast the first stone etc. While the modern world lowers the bar more & more so that you could stumble or be blown across it in the name of freedom, believers in the Lord Jesus Christ are called to aim high. Not in a moralistic righteousness of human attainment & will, but in trusting in the grace & power of Christ who freely gives His Spirit that we may do battle with those things that seek to undo real freedom expressed in human form & that which mirrors God’s ways.

God gives us boundaries for our protection & good. Resist says God, resist. & when you are weak seek Him in prayer, seek Him in His word. Adultery is more than the physical act, it’s much much more & it’s pretty much everywhere…but so is God only more so. Omnipresent & omnipotent.

Psalm 12:6-8. And the words of the LORD are flawless, like silver purified in a crucible, like gold refined seven times. You, LORD, will keep the needy safe and will protect us forever from the wicked, who freely strut about while depravity is honored by the human race.

Working class cleaner

Karl the cleaner was doing the last shift for the week…Friday arvo. He was on a roll, even with a touch of fatigue & losing some time due to a hose blockage thanks to some remnant objects from the industrial & art classrooms, MIG wire & broken pottery with a special mention.

Approaching the primary classes with confidence as if on the home stretch with the end in sight Karl opened the first of four rooms in the block. The primary students had had a doing day…doing glitter & with all their heart by the look of it….Outside the heavy storm was letting it all come down, water, water everywhere, inside it was glitter, glitter everywhere.

But in spirit & perseverance Karl pressed on, like the students & teachers earlier in the day, there was another slope to ascend before the grand view & satisfaction of completeness could soak in…& so it was & all in good time, God's time.

two minute doodle

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ ”

Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.
For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

No one has ever seen God, but the one and only  Son, who is himself God and  is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known. John 1:14-18.

To infinity & beyond nature

I was doodling late last night. I wouldnt say this is the finished product, far from it. But for now I will post it anyway.

In the book of Revelation we read these words...

Rev 1:8. “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”

&

Rev 1:18. I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.

So Jesus calls himself alphabet (Greek)...

ALPHA

OMEGA

The beginning & the end

We get  a glimpse of God's magnitude when we consider the universe at this point in time, only a glimpse. Yet when we turn our eyes & ears to Jesus we get to appreciate God expressed in human form.

God is Spirit, functional, intelligent, just & merciful & beyong human measure.

Psalm 103:1-22.

Joy to the World

Stephen Fry is in Australia & once again demonstrates atheistic temporal bliss & bias…& the media lap it up. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-11-04/stephen-fry-sex-love-god/6910836. Once again God gets the blame for the original sin, once again Christ gets ignored for going all the way to the cross in humble humility so that the lost may be found & death & suffering will be no more. The longer God takes the more time people have to turn from their ignorance. 2 Peter 3:13-15.

In the meantime this bountiful & purpose built earth & an intelligent humanity demonstrates being made in the image of God far above the animal & bacteria world but still lost as ever clinging to an illogical faith that living matter came from non- living matter & an I will do as I please belief. Mr Fry & his 5 million followers have faith to be sure, but it is not a faith that can save, only God can do that.

“You can't just say there is a God because well, the world I beautiful. You have to account for bone cancer in children. You have to account for the fact that almost all animals in the wild live under stress with not enough to eat and will die violent and bloody deaths…..” The 'quite innaccurate' Stephen Fry.

Yes the Bible doesn’t just say there is a God because the world is beautiful. The answer is right there in the first three chapters…humanity thought it knew better than God, denied the warning & payed the price. Its right there in black & white.

  1. No more let sins and sorrows grow,
    Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found,
Far as the curse is found,
Far as, far as, the curse is found.
  2. Isaac Watts.
