The 60's wasn't all flower power, sex, drugs & rock n roll.

There are some things that are just hard to comprehend in the Christian life…they don’t come naturally & such is our nature. Moses is one such example of many.

My wife is on a devotion roster at her work place. She was preparing a devotion last week & was struggling to put it together. It was on Moses, so I gave her an old book* of sermons from the 60’s that had one on Moses & she was able to refine her initial workings.

I offered to do some illustrations to accompany her talk. She delivered it yesterday & gave me permission to pass it on.

Day 1, term 1 2017

The beginning

The Bible speaks of many beginnings, for many people and not all of them were easy!

Let's consider Moses.

We know that Moses was born of Hebrew parents, raised in the courts of Egypt and then became a shepherd in Midian.  Some time later God called Moses from a burning bush, God had a job for Moses to do.

Ex 3:10 - So now, go.  I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.

However, Moses saw plenty of problems and raised 5 objections to God's call.he was too old, he didn't have the right skills or strengths, and he couldn't even speak confidently.  Other people would be more suitable than him, at the end he asked God:

Ex 4:13 - but Moses said, "O Lord, please send someone else to do it."

Not an auspicious beginning!

We also are prone to object when things don't go our way, when we get sick or become unemployed, other people seem better off - we don't want to pick up our cross and carry it joyfully.

So God gave Moses a practical lesson.  He told him to throw down his staff, that was easy to obey.  But Moses was frightened when it turned into a serpent and he fled from it.  He didn't have the chance to go far for God then told him to grab it by the tail.

Madness, surely!  Isn't that dangerous, won't he get bitten?  Often we are scared to do what God wants us to do, but when God asks you to do something he will give you the strength to do it.  So Moses acted in faith and grabbed the tail of that serpent - and it turned back into his staff!  Moses didn't expect that.

God wants us to act in faith, to act in his strength and trust Christ to overcome our serpents.
Dare to be different, even when it may involve ridicule or self discipline.  Take by the tail the year that lies ahead of you.  Get into your work, study, church work like a son or daughter of God.  Do a good work for the Lord, reach out your hand and take it by the tail!

man vs God

Numbers 23:19 God is not a human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?

Thy kingdom come

It seems a contradiction at first that Jesus the good shepherd would send his sheep out into the wild world of hostility & deception. Yet this is what the Saviour says is for our good & true it is for he is with His church.

His instruction is clear…be on guard as he is on guard. The church in general appearance is not all for one & one for all. There are false apostles that twist the word of God to their own ends, with good intent as much as bad. Outwardly is not the same as inwardly. Matt 7:15-20.Contrary to popular fashion trends, clothes do not maketh the person,or a certificate of acheivement for that matter, it is the heart & head & actions which define us foremost.

The church of God is called to defend the faith, not twist it.In the meantime many seek to undermine the Christ & His messianic mission to call the lost to repentance & faith lest they fail to escape the coming judgement assigned to the historical narrative timeline.

Who was Jesus, was he misunderstood or do we misunderstand ourselves & the tricky ways in which Scripture & God is seemingly undermined & has been since the beginning.

time after time

I have been married 22 years to the day(28th) & the bride has become more beautiful with age. The joining of man & woman into one functional, spiritual, sexual, emotional entity is one of the many blessings that God has given his church & his world.

Imitations & distortions abound but God’s original design is clearly seen, even if it looks more like a remnant than a current trending status quo in self determined & self-assured dire straits.

The blessing of Christian marriage is not marriage in and of itself but the fact that God is in the centre. He is in the midst of it all & really is what makes the relationship tick.

Others want in on my marriage, I get requests online to share nude photos & perverse stuff like that (they don’t seem interested in her inner beauty or what she has to say). The TV wants to shape the idea of marriage, governments want to shape the idea of marriage. This trend setting world is missing out on so much as it looks for love & meaning more in keeping with ancient Rome stuck on a hedonistic bent than a fulfilment of ecstatic joy & delight that gives contentment.

Solid Rock

Australia: The land down under the equator that is connected to all other lands like the story of humanity separated by the vast ocean with all its force & volume. Being a somewhat big country the landscape changes significantly. Big hot deserts dry as a bone, rainforests drenched in shade & moisture, gum trees as far as the eye can see, rivers that weave a way, a coastland of white & golden sand that meets the turquoise waters where the reefs give way to the ocean that descends into the deep. Be amazed but be very careful.

Australia is a big land with many skeletons & many closets. Deadly creatures, deadly philosophies & deadly science driven by the savage Darwinian myth of a superior race allegedly more advanced. http://creation.com/missing-the-link-between-darwin-and-racism.

Australia has a dark past & a dark present & in this darkness a light shines. A glorious light that leads us home, far from the devastation & judgement to come.1 John 1:5. - 1 John 2:2. The way forward requires forgiveness of sins & there is only one who can truly do that. A beautiful Saviour.

From the country to the kitchen

It’s been hot here, it’s been dry here with not much rain. The river is struggling with algal blooms (blue green) due to nutrient rich run off from the farms mostly. Yesterday after church my son & daughter went with a friend to do some fishing further up where the water is clean.

The friend is very good at fishing, he had caught three to my sons nil, so they swapped rods with lures & the friend proceeded to hook another fish on my sons rod.

My wife was very happy as she received two fish which were already scaled & gutted. She filleted them, made some batter & fried them in a pan.

Big Pictures

If a nation elects a president to govern, then it makes sense that the president should govern in the interest of his or her biological people (humanly speaking). The spirit of Nationalism also equates to democracy.

Nations are not what they used to be in terms of genetic heritage. The mix is more complex & degenerated. The multicultural-countercultural relationships trade on & trade off.

World events & the scattering of the peoples & regathering, like the wind that blows back & forth & round & round...while God's unchangable ways confound those locked in to nature or false gods.

Psalm 103:15-17.

In keeping with God's Promises.

It’s not that hard to find evidence of a global flood, a catastrophic event that shook the earth & wiped humanity of the face of the earth except for those hidden in the ark. Peter tells us 8 people in all were saved. A baptism of fire & rain never witnessed before & not to be witnessed again until the return of Christ.

It must have been hard going with lots of toil & labour in preparation & meantime the peoples made hay while the sun shined. Noah & his family-just a silly old story with a hidden meaning? Not according to Jesus & the inspired Word.

Matt 24:37. 2 Pet2:1-12.

2Pe 3:13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells

Mapping Evil/Sin

I was a free citizen in a supposed free land yet I was just as enslaved as I dictated my terms as to what I did & didn’t want while the enslaved capitalists dictated what they wanted & it seemed they always wanted more. Meanwhile communism was crumbling & the corruption just as prevalent. The dictators in middle earth, the caste system in the area & the African jungle & plains where blood splattered while diamonds & gold were mined were no more holy. The Americas seem to have the same problem. Corruption is diverse & creative, an evil laundered across the globe.

You can take the boy out of the country but you can’t take the country out of the boy. Yes somethings are deep within our hearts & political persuasion is not enough to change that & such is the power/ influence of sin.

But it’s not like that anymore for me, like being lost in a storm or at sea, I don’t need to save me from myself. Christ has come, Jesus saves effectually. In God I trust.

Heidelberg Catechism:

34. Q. Why do you call him our Lord?
A. Because he has redeemed us, body and soul, from all our sins, not with gold or silver, but with his precious blood, and has delivered us from all the power of the devil, and has made us his own possession.

Ocean Blues, Resemblance & the Deep End

“It is little wonder we are spooked by sharks. Psychologists and shark experts almost universally agree that sensationalist media reports, negative portrayals in films like Jaws and The Shallows, and a general lack of understanding about the species have created an irrational and unjustified fear of sharks.http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-01-15/sharks-never-sleep-shark-attacks-fear-facts/8180252

Personally I would have thought my healthy fear of ‘sharks do attack & kill’ was based on observational evidence & eye witness accounts relayed via the TV or computer.

Fear, being wired into our system can be for our good. The ocean already was & still is a dangerous place regardless of current populations & coastal activity. The Hollywood movies that exaggerate & dramatize also push the not so scientific “primal fear of being eaten alive is also an evolutionary hangover of our ancestors having been prey.” Ignorance is not bliss.

The Recycling Worldliness

We are tempted & persuaded to believe in our own greatness… yes we are clever as we reveal the ability to fashion & shape our world. In a way we adorn ourselves with medallions of great honour & rob God of the honour due to Him. Such is our lot, such is our nature, and it is our universal trait that goes back to the fall.

Yes we can make history (& tragedy) but we can never recreate God or undo the curse as much as we try & try & think & think. God will always be God despite our image-i-nations telling us nature is all there is as we seek to imitate life & lifelessness.

That is why Christ Jesus is so important & central to our restoration. Only in him is there truth & light that can transform & break the prevailing recycled evil still so prevalent in the supposed modern age of throw away plastic & petrochemical concoctions. John 1:1-18.

Distance Education

My mum plays lawn bowls. One of the aims of the game is to bowl the large ball as close as you can to the kitty or jack (smaller white ball). At times things can get close & a measuring tape is utilised to see who is the closest.

Similarly, measurements can also be applied to the distance between the earth & the moon. The moon is moving further away from the earth each year.

“The moon is slowly receding from earth at about 1½ inches (4 cm) per year, and the rate would have been greater in the past. But even if the moon had started receding from being in contact with the earth, it would have taken only 1.37 billion years to reach its present distance. This gives a maximum possible age of the moon—not the actual age. This is far too young for evolution (and much younger than the radiometric ‘dates’ assigned to moon rocks)”.http://creation.com/how-old-is-the-earth.

Pre-Dodgy Dating Methods

Movie night with snacks, mixed with memories of grandma’s BBQ corn & lemon flavoured limestone water was a nice way to unwind after a hectic week out on the plains. Singing & dancing too.

Progress & Looking forward ?

Blind Spots

We all want progress, but if you're on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road; in that case, the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive. C. S. Lewis

Dan 12:4 But you, Daniel, close up and seal the words of the scroll until the time of the end. Many will go here and there to increase knowledge.

Anarchy & the ark

Noah didn’t fall for all the ‘diversity’ that had gripped the modern world of his day. For all the yes we can it was a no from Noah & his family. Could the world really become so corrupted? Yes it could, the human heart can put its mind to many, many things that are contrary to the Creators call on ‘our’ life.1 Peter 3:8-22.

God is just as patient today and just as determined to save. Noah entered the ark & Christ entered Jerusalem so that we may be shielded from the wrath of God through faith in Him. Build on the rock of ages & trust in His Grace (salvation, justification, sanctification, etc). Yes He did, Yes he will.

As nations seek autonomy from God they would do well to consider what happened to Israel/Jerusalem. Ezek 14:12-23. Warnings are for our good, but only if we take head. There is more to life than the popular vote & leaders that come & go. Life is big, God is bigger still.

Created Intelligent Order (marred by the fall)

Port Macquarie has history & drama in its elevated coastline as rocks give way to pockets of rainforest amidst the tourist apartments & city living. Further along the ports entrance/exit is the estuary & modified canals with stylish houses & fancy boats that mix with oyster leases & modest homes that reflect a less affluent (less debt?) & less populated time. To get around & cross the larger waterways you have to access the ferry services, the river is not a red light you can run to get to the other side.

The crabs were funny & interesting to watch, the fish & sea birds had me filled with amazement as I pondered their complexity & design. Psalm 8:1-9.
